The atmosphere of the underground temple of Goa Giri Putri on the island of Nusa Penida (Bali) is incredibly serene. No noise disturbs the silence, except for the rustling of the wings of the bats that cluster around the stalactites.
Here and there, censers burn on the altars that line the various places of worship. Small spotlights cast a pale light that reflects off the damp rock of the walls. On the ground, paving stones and pebbles draw geometric shapes and show the way.
