There is so much misinformation in this video…
As someone who travels often, my most recent trips being Philippines, Bali (twice) and Singapore. Here are some real tips on how to save money in Bali, specifically.
First: The key to saving money when traveling abroad, especially Bali is to do your research well in advance, and know what the local prices for different services are. The locals will purposely raise their prices to tourists, but if you are informed on what the real prices are, you can get save some money and avoid paying too much.
Money Changing: Always look for money changers in the city that are authorized (they will have a sign saying so). The rates in Ubud between money changers is usually the same, so as long as it’s a bonafide money changer, you don’t really need to shop around. Note: Bonafide money changers will always, always give you a receipt. If you do not get a receipt, demand your money back and go somewhere else.
-Do NOT use ATMs
-It is unnecessary to change money in the airport, contrary to what the video states.
IF you are visiting another island, for example, Lembongan, make sure you exchange in Ubud, on your way from the airportand to the ferry. Exchange rates in the islands are usually much worse than Ubud. Make sure you exchange enough money for your stay on the other islands, or you will end up losing money.
-Important: Make sure you bring “crisp” money, that is, bills that are as new as possible. Money changers will not accept bills that have tears, or faded parts of the bill. Also, bring large bills ($100s) the exchange rate for smaller bills is less.
Stay: IF you do not have a million credit cards to draw points upon, or don’t want to use credit cards for your stay in Bali.
-Avoid hotels at all costs. $100+ USD per night for a hotel can be called a scam in its own right, considering the alternatives.
-There are various sites where you can book a homestay, that is: a private property with various rooms in which you can stay, for a fraction of the cost of a hotel. Don’t worry, these properties are specifically made for tourist stays, and they are all licensed and authorized to rent rooms. The rooms are extremely well kept, and they all include a free breakfast.
-You can contact your host in advance, and plan everything. If you talk to your host, they can usually arrange pick up from the airport. Note: Pick up from the airport costs around 25 USD. Do NOT pay much more than this (some drivers will try to charge much more, though).
-Your host might also be able to set up tours and day drivers in advance. Talk to them and see what they can do for you.
-Read the reviews! Some hosts are extremely helpful, others not so much.
Case in point: On my most recent trip, I visited Lembongan, did the Nusa Penida tour, and then stayed in 2 different places in Ubud.
-The first place in Ubud came to around $34 USD/night for the room. Once again, these are not crappy, low quality rooms. They are very good, well-maintained, sheets-changed daily rooms, pretty much what you would get in a hotel.
-If you are traveling in a group, consider getting a private villa. Our second place was one of these. A private villa with three rooms, private pool, garden, outdoor kitchen tv/internet, etc. For around $54 USD per night per room. In a hotel, you do not get a private pool, or a private place… despite paying over $100 USD per night.
Nusa Penida:
Once again, talk to your host. They will usually be very happy to arrange everything for you. If they aren’t, find somewhere else to stay. Our host in Lembongan arranged everything. The boat ride from Lembongan to Nusa Penida, the driver, and the return boat ride. We had nothing to worry about, except being at the pickup point on time. Also, the driver for Nusa will always be a private driver, you won’t be sharing your car with anyone else. A day trip to Nusa Penida including transportation to/from wherever you’re staying, boat ride, and private driver goes for around $30-35 USD per person. Also includes lunch. $50 is way too much (like the person in the video paid). Always do your tours through the place where you’re staying at. Everything from the tour, to the ferry ride from/to Ubud, will be cheaper.
Half a day driver in Ubud goes for around $28 USD. Anything above this amount and you’re being charged too much. A full day is around $56 USD. We ended up making some additional stops in our day trips, so we gave our driver some extra. $40 USD for half a day is… also way too much.
Goa Gajah Temple:
Sarong is included for free with admission price. Do NOT buy a sarong from the many people that will try to sell you one outside.
Mount Batur sunrise trekking: Highly recommended. It’s a long, arduous climb at night to the top of an active volcano (last eruption was in 2000), but the view of the sunrise you will get is unprecedented. Totally worth it. This comes to around $35 USD/person.
Ubud Market: Prices are always hiked up for tourists. The actual worth of the item is around a third of the asking price. Here’s how to haggle:
-Offer around a third of the asking price. The seller will always say “no no, I can’t do that”. Work around this number, until you reach an amount you are happy with.
-If the seller does not budge, walk away. 90% of the time they will call you back, and even agree on the price that you want (a third).
-If you really want the item, and don’t mind paying a bit more than what it’s worth, feel free to buy it. However, note that there are many sellers in the market, offering the same item. Some sellers are more willing to negotiate than others.
In conclusion:
-Look for bonafide money changers
-Change money in Ubud, before you head off to another island (such as Lembongan)
-Plan your trip well in advance, and avoid hotels. Book a homestay, or a private villa if you’re in a group.
-Inform yourself of the real prices (some of them I put above), before going, and write it down. Locals will always hike prices up for tourists, but will quickly back down if you’re properly informed.
-Always haggle, especially in the Ubud market.
Some prices cannot be haggled. Restaurants are a good example of this. Also the place where you stay, those prices cannot be haggled either. Do your research, and take time to plan ahead.

I’m sorry I’m confused how this is titled money saving tips. I paid way less for my trips in Bali. Klook is wayyyyyy more expensive than arranging at tour or arranging a day trip with an honest hotel or lodging in bali. Also all the coffee plantations I know off there are free admission with free sample unless you want to try the luwak coffee.

I spent 2 weeks in Bali. I could barely afford 3 days in Boracay or El Nido. And Bali is so amazingly cultural and full of art.

It would be great if you didnโt promote Luwak Coffee. Its extremely cruel. We love your content other than that!

Did you like the company you used for traveling around Nusa Penida? We are a family of 6 people who will be staying at Nusa Lembongan, but we really want to rent a van for a day to go explore the west coast of nusa penida. Iยดve heard about so many different companies and prices that Iยดm kinda lost in all this iformation..!
