Gateways are significant as a point of entry to a building in Bali. The distinct designs allow passage while they also prevent evil spirits from entering. Some walls are simple in design while there are some others which are particularly ornate in both design and construction.
The doorway itself is closed off by a traditional two leaved Balinese door which is often decorated with carved wood panels and, in more opulent situations, gilded or painted. Most of the temple gateways are adorned with an ogling monster carved over the doorway.
With bulging eyes, sharp teeth and hands on each side, this is Bhoma, the protector whose role is to scare away evil influences. For the Bali locals, their artistic, religious and ceremonial life are all connected.
