If you want to find a cheap t shirt you should go to Sukowati traditional market, its nearby Sanur. Kuta area is expensive because it’s a tourist location.

I’m Indonesian and wow meeting allthose kind if vendors and such people are dangerous. If I may suggests some tips, it is best for you guys and others not to travel to quiet place at night and you might wanna go to mal in Bali at night. Could the nonsensical “negotiations” be due to the language barrier? I can’t make sense of it otherwise. How are they ever gonna attract tourists with what they’re doing? The kind of bargaining I’m used to goes like:
Vendor: 100php
Me: Can you do 75php?
Vendor: 80php last price

I got the same treatment from Thai vendors. They don’t want us to fit the clothing because upfront they told us that we’re fat! And some vendors would stare at us rudely while we scan through hangers. It’s really different when in my country,Philippines, the vendors would always compliment or find a better word for their customers regardless of size. Too bad, being white has its disadvantages in SE Asia

All your experiences seem spot on to mine in Kuta with the non-negotiating vendors & street scams. I love Bali but tend to stray from Kuta these days. Glad nothing bad came of that cigar incident!

In Southeast Asia, I find haggling in the Philippines the easiest. Like you can get a 10,000-peso ($220) item for, say, 2,000.00 ($44). Even less. No kidding. Thailand is quite okay too. But not big enough discounts as compared to the Philippines. I presume it’s the proximity to China, where most of these fake goods come from.
The worst I’ve been for haggling was Malaysia. Like they sell stuff for really expensive price but and really won’t give the slightest discount. At worst, they even get offended when you haggle. I guess Indonesia isn’t so different.

I never shop at the market stalls anymore. They are so difficult to negotiate with and i have been to Bali 7 times. There are a few fixed price stalls that sell very cheap clothing. Unfortunatly Bali has a dark side. You were so lucky with those men. They were trying to scam you. They put the drugs in your hand and then make you buy it or either worse a cop shows up and either your arrested or you pay a huge amount to get out of it. Most Balinese are lovely I hope you get to see other parts of Bali.
